A University Student’s Mini Guide to Heaton

Heaton is an excellent choice for students to live in during their time at university, with great links to the city, quality properties and plenty of cafes, pubs and places to eat nearby.

If you are at looking for student accommodation in and around Newcastle, Heaton is an area which offers a range of different properties and is a known hub for students. Along with Jesmond and Sandyford, Heaton is one of the top choices amongst students due to its location, living costs, and the collection of pubs, bars and shops around it.

Located only a couple of miles outside the city centre, Heaton is not situated very far away from the Toon, and it is easy enough to get to and from the university campuses. There is also easy access to metro stations, meaning trips to the coast and other parts of the North East are only a short journey away!

Student Accommodation

Split across High Heaton and South Heaton, there are housing options available to suit everyone. It is often a popular choice for students leaving halls to live in large groups, and Heaton offers properties that contain up to eight bedrooms making it a perfect choice for those who want to stick together following a year living in halls.

There are also plenty of maisonettes and flats for those looking to live in smaller groups, so there really are options that suit everyone.

One big pull of Heaton for students is that it properties are typically cheaper to rent when compared to the other student hotspots in the region. Despite the lower price, there is still top quality accommodation available in Heaton but as with anything, the best ones tend to get picked up fast!

Getting Around

Only two miles outside of town and only a short walking distance from Jesmond or Sandyford, Heaton is in an ideal location. If you’re not up for walking, Chillingham Road Metro station is located just off the main street. Alternatively, Byker Metro stop is also just a short walk away from Heaton, giving you another option for getting to the city centre in no time.

Getting around Heaton is quite simple, with the lively Chillingham Road running right through the centre of it, up until the Coast Road. Bus routes run through Heaton which provide another transport option, and there is no issues with getting taxis. 

Bars and Pubs

A big attraction of Heaton is the close proximity you are to some of the best bars and pubs in Newcastle. Heaton is situated in between Jesmond and Ouseburn, which are renowned for offering alternative places to go if you don’t fancy a drink in the city centre.

Osborne Road is just a short distance away from Heaton and contains a mix of traditional pubs such as the Punch Bowl and Collingwood arms, as well as more modern bars. Ideal for those who want to watch sport, listen to music or take advantage of student deals, the choice of modern bars include 97 & Social, Jam Jar and the well renowned Spy Bar.

Heaton is also within walking distance of Ouseburn, so if live music is more your thing, The Cluny is an excellent old school venue with a brilliant bar and outdoor seating area.

Heaton itself also has its choice of establishments, with the Chillingham and the Northumberland Hussar being options if you want to choose a pub on the doorstep. 

Restaurants

Anyone looking for a good place to eat is not going to be disappointed in Heaton. There are options which cover breakfast, lunch, dinner and everything in between! Butterfly Cabinet is a popular unique café located on Heaton Road which serves delicious burgers and all day breakfasts and has become a go-to spot amongst students. Other popular options include the Naked Deli and Vicenzo’s.

There’s also no shortage of takeaways, so if you ever want food to go or a meal delivered to your doorstep there is plenty to choose from. 

Groceries/ Shopping

There are supermarkets and shops conveniently located around the area of Heaton, so there is always a shop available to meet your needs. There is a Tesco Express and a Sainsbury’s located in the centre of Chillingham Road, meaning it is easily accessible from all areas of Heaton.

If you need to do a bigger shop, the Asda superstore and Morrisons in Byker are within walking distance and are bound to have everything you are looking for grocery-wise. If you want to go clothes shopping, the city centre is only a short distance away.

All things considered; it is easy to see why Heaton has been such a popular area of living amongst students for so long. The location, relatively low housing costs and access to transport makes it a top choice for any groups of students looking to rent accommodation.
